Three Things Thursday No. 4: New Year’s Nesting
Hey there!
Welcome to the web edition of Three Things Thursday!! This is issue number 4, wherein we discuss my house, decluttering and surviving the rest of winter.
So, how are you doing? Still in the holiday glow or ready to move on to the new year? I’m definitely feeling the itch. I mean, we’re still on vacation at my house, and I’m having a blast playing board games and making gluten-free cookies. Buuuuut, I can’t help feeling a little cluttered and a little crowded with all of the post-holiday mess. I can tell I’m going to be on a decluttering binge soon.
Plus, do you get the January blues? Man, I do. I’m fine through the holidays — all the magic and sparkle — but come January 1st I start to get seriously antsy-pants. This year I’m trying to embrace the Danish art of hygge and see if that can help me actually enjoy the last of winter rather than enduring it. More on that below.
Speaking of, here’s this week’s three things:
Thing 1: Your Home’s Best & Worst
At my last Ask Me Anything, my Instagram friend Monica asked me, “What do you most like about your home? And what do you least like about your home?”
My response at the time was that I like most that it is one story and that it was a fixer so I don’t have to feel guilty about renovating. What I said I liked least was that it was too close to the main street and quasi-modern with a low-pitched 1950s roof, where I had wanted something more tradition.
Today I would give a different answer. I still love my one-story, but what’s bugging me is how crowded it is right now! We’ve won the clutter trifecta: home renovation, a vast pile of inherited junk and post-holiday clutter. Which has got me thinking about decluttering.
More on that in Thing 2, but meanwhile, what do YOU like least and most about your home?
Thing 2: Decluttering for Magpies
So, confession time: I am terrible at decluttering. I love things, especially things that have a story or need a project. I see the potential in everything and don’t want to abandon things and leave them to neglect.
It’s a little silly, I know. The big problem is that bringing it all home (along with the trifecta above) has filled my house to the brim.
I really hate being crowded!! I’ve been working on ways to help my sentimental heart part with the excess, and I’m writing a series of posts to share. This week, the overview. Check it out:
Thing 3: Hygge for the Winter Win
You’ve probably already heard of hygge, the Danish lifestyle movement. It’s been all over the internet the last few years.
When I first heard of it I thought it was just using candles and wearing fuzzy socks, but on further study I think there’s a deeper core to this winter survival strategy.
I’ve outlined my thoughts in a new blog post and I’m going to give it my best effort this year to try and avoid post-holiday winter blues. What are your best strategies for making it through the rest of winter? Here it is:
That’s it!
I hope you’ve had or are having a lovely holiday and winter break. I’ll be back next week with some classic New Year thoughts on goal setting and dealing with those pesky unfinished projects!
