Three Things Thursday No. 16: Making Things
Howdy!
Welcome to the 16th edition of Three Things Thursday, wherein we talk about making stuff!
How are you??? It has gotten really warm and sunshiney here so I have been sneaking off to the back garden to potter and improve. It’s been so many years since I’ve been able to really concentrate on the garden, it feels good to be getting back out there and getting things into shape.
Last week we talked about how having projects to do can help us feel purposeful while we are at home (and also be FUN!!). I also feel like making things helps me in other ways—it helps me process, it helps me think, it helps me feel useful, it helps me add beauty to the world. Our creative works have impact, both on our inner world and the outer one.
So, here’s some things I’ve been making lately:
Thing 1: String Quilt
Quilting is my happy place. This is my latest quilt project. It’s inspired by a classic vintage technique and I’m really having fun playing with all the colors. So far this quilt is made almost entirely from scraps, though I am adding some colors in when I run out so it stays balanced. I’ll share a tutorial in the next few weeks as I get further along and work the kinks out of the system. :-) But in the meantime if you are quilt-savvy the blocks are 2” strips on an 8 ½” square foundation.
You can see more of the progress on my Instagram account:

Thing 2: Cloth Masks
I made my first one this week and it did not come easily! It’s been a long time since I’ve made something that wasn’t flat and it took awhile for me to get it right. I used the Kaiser Permanente cloth mask pattern because it doesn’t require any notions (and I don’t have any), and I am pretty pleased with how it came out. I am going to try a few more patterns as well but if you are interested in this particular mask here’s the link to the PDF from Kaiser:

Thing 3: Stuffed Dolls
As I’ve said, I’ve been sewing flat things for so many years now that I mightily resist the idea of sewing anything dimensional. Buuuuut, my daughter really wanted to try making some dolls so we found this super super simple pattern on Etsy and gave it a try. Turns out it was really fun and didn’t take very long either. I might (MIGHT) even try making another one! But we will see.
In the meantime, if you are interested, the pattern is really adorable and includes little animals, too. You can find it here:

That’s it!
This week it’s all about turning to our creative work to find our groove. I’ll be sharing more details and blog posts soon.
Now it’s your turn: what are you making right now? Leave a comment below and share!
You can also always find me on Facebook or Instagram!
Much love,
P.S. Last week I mentioned that my daughter and I are working on a YouTube channel that’s all about making things, playing games and having fun, especially with our favorite game, Stardew Valley. Last weekend we got the introduction part of the video done, I can’t wait to share it with you!! Fingers crossed, our first video will be up by the end of the month. But in the meantime, here’s a quick sneak peak of our channel art. More soon!
